Travel to Middle Earth

You have found the ultimate guide to Lord of The Rings filming locations in New Zealand! Use this to travel to the famous and obscure filming sites. You will truly feel like you are in Middle Earth.

Welcome to Middle Earth

You’ve arrived at the page that I may have been the most excited to get to create. I’m not exaggerating in saying that half the reason I wanted to go to New Zealand in the first place was to see everything related to the Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings movies as possible. I love those books and movies almost to an embarrassing degree. Going to the real Middle Earth was very special for me.

I did some real digging to find all kinds of obscure filming locations. No other place on the internet that I could find really provided me with the geographic specificity I wanted for finding exact LOTR filming locations. So, I’m making a guide myself! If you’re looking for a very exact LOTR filming location guide made by a LOTR lover, you’ve found it. If you are not an LOTR fan, these filming locations are still beautiful and often hidden New Zealand gems.

There are two types of LOTR places to visit: the ones that sell tickets, and one you have to search for like you’re Gandalf and Aragorn trying to find Gollum. The former include Hobbiton and Weta Workshop and are by far the easiest to find. The latter includes places like Edoras, the “Get off the road!” scene, the Dimholt road, and many more.
